DICK NORMAN AIRCHECKS
Station: Newsradio 970 WFLA
Topic: Ted Bundy Memorial Parade, Bar-B-Q, and Celebrity
Roast
Date: 1/24/1989
During
the early morning hours of Sunday, January 15, 1978,
Ted Bundy
entered the Chi Omega sorority house in Tallahassee and
brutally
attacked four women residing there. Two young women lost their
lives, and two others sustained serious injuries. Two weeks later,
a
12 year-old girl disappeared from her school in Lake
City. Her battered body was found weeks later in a wooded area near
the Suwanee River.Bundy
was arrested, tried, convicted and sentenced to death for all three
murders.
Following numerous appeals and delays,
Bundy was executed in the
electric chair in the morning hours of January 24, 1989 at the state
prison in Starke.
That
afternoon, Dick Norman hosted “The First Annual Ted Bundy Memorial
Parade Bar-B-Q and Celebrity Roast” on 970 WFLA. Along with Tedd
Webb and Courtney Campbell, Dick created the illusion of a parade
through the streets of downtown Tampa celebrating the execution.
Some found humor in this broadcast, others were outraged, and a few
avoided the streets of downtown Tampa for fear of being caught up in
the traffic jam.
Two days later, Dick Norman lost his life in a
traffic accident at the corner of US 301 and Causeway Blvd.
